Breaking Barriers

Breaking Barriers: Looking at Women’s Suffrage in Essex will tour throughout Essex.  In the age of the cult of celebrity with girls aspiring to be footballers wives, Parliamentary Outreach has worked with local community groups in Essex to discover how the work of the suffrage movement is still relevant to lives today.

Rachel Gadsden, the award winning artist, worked as part of the Breaking Barriers project, with groups from Rethink, a national charity that works with people who have and who are recovering from severe mental illness. Workshops were held in Southend and the groups were encouraged to create their own works of art to reflect and interpret their discoveries about suffrage.

With these images Rachel then created an original work that looks at both the story of past and present.  It expresses the community voices in Essex and their relationship with the women’s suffrage movement. This artwork will be on display as part of the exhibition at Central Museum, Southend on Sea from 6 June.
