The Sky in September
The Planets.
There is currently only one planet visible in the evening skies - Jupiter. The giant planet, composed of gas, is now visible as a brilliant star-like object low in the south as soon as it gets dark. It is well worth a look, and if you have binoculars, see if you can make out the 4 main satellites, called Io,. Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.
The Constellations
This month we have the summertime constellations of Cygnus, Lyra and Aquila well on view during the early part of the night. However, the autumn is now creeping into the heavens, as Cassiopeia, Andromeda and Pegasus can be seen in the east.
Look out for the tiny summertime patterns of Delphinus and Sagitta - tiny but pretty little groups of stars close to Cygnus.
